The Journey of an Engineer: A Story of Dreams, Struggles, and Growing Up

A tale of leaving home, finding friends, facing challenges, and discovering who we really are. By: AKSHAY KUMAR, CSE, 2024-28(Computer Science & Engineering)

“They say, ‘Life changes for those who dare to change it.’” Every year, thousands of students leave behind their small, familiar worlds—the comfort of home-cooked meals, their mother’s loving scolding, their father’s quiet support, and the warmth of familiar streets—to step into a new city with a dream: to build a better future. There are many academic paths one can choose, but the journey of B.Tech remains truly one of a kind. Some students come from metropolitan cities, some from small towns; some speak fluent English, while others shyly manage a simple “yes ma’am.” Yet their eyes hold the same spark—the ambition to shape life through their own effort. The beauty of the first year lies in the simple fact that everyone begins together. In the orientation hall, every face carries the same mix of nervousness, hope, and excitement. Slowly, the canteen becomes the new adda, the hostel breeze turns into comfort, and strangers transform into family. The four years of engineering often feel like a movie montage—fun at times, chaotic at others, confusing at many moments, and occasionally filled with that classic breakdown thought: “What am I even doing?” But soon comes the real test—semester exams.Nights stretch till 2 AM, books remain open but minds go blank, and one universal question haunts every student: “When did we even study this chapter?” When the library overflows, students sit in corridors, trying to decode formulas that suddenly look like alien scripts. Yet in the middle of this academic storm, there is always one anchor—friends. Those late-night words of reassurance,“Bro, don’t panic… we’ll do it. We’re in this together,” often feel more valuable than any textbook. Engineering’s deepest lessons are not always taught in classrooms—they are learned in these moments of shared stress, collective courage, and unspoken solidarity. Students learn how to handle pressure, stay strong, and support each other—skills far beyond the pages of a syllabus. Assignments build up, practical files demand attention, and viva exams arrive with intimidating expressions from teachers. Yet this is exactly where true learning unfolds. Time management, teamwork, confidence, patience, and the art of learning from mistakes—these lessons are ingrained not through theory, but through experience. As time moves on, things begin to change. Hostel rooms shift, juniors turn into seniors, and noisy WhatsApp groups gradually fall silent. The people who once lived together day and night start walking toward different futures. The same students who arrived together on Day 1 eventually spread across different paths— some in jobs, some in higher studies, some running startups, and some exploring new possibilities. But one thing remains unchanged—these four years transform them from ordinary students into true engineers. A beautiful blend of dreams, struggles, friendships, failures, and achievements turns engineering into more than just a degree— it becomes a complete story, a chapter of life that stays forever
