Why This Matters More Than You Think
Most of us carry our PAN card without giving it much thought. It comes out when we open a bank account, file taxes, or make a big investment — and we assume it's always going to work. But there's a good chance your PAN could be sitting quietly in your wallet in an "inoperative" state right now, and you wouldn't even know it until something goes wrong.
The Government of India made it mandatory under Section 139AA of the Income Tax Act, 1961 for every eligible PAN holder to link their PAN with their Aadhaar. The deadline for most taxpayers passed on May 31, 2024, and a specific extended deadline of December 31, 2025 was given to those who received their PAN using an Aadhaar enrolment ID.
If you missed either of those dates and haven't linked yet — your PAN is now inoperative, and you'll need to pay a ₹1,000 penalty to reactivate it.
Even if you think you've already linked them, it's worth taking two minutes to double-check. The status check is free, quick, and requires no login.

What Happens If Your PAN is Inoperative?
An inoperative PAN is not a cancelled PAN — but it causes a surprising number of problems in daily financial life. Here's what you could face:
1. You Can't File Your Income Tax Return The e-Filing portal will reject your ITR submission if your PAN is inoperative. This means you could miss filing deadlines, attracting interest and additional penalties on any unpaid tax.
2. Higher TDS Gets Deducted Under Sections 206AA and 206CC of the Income Tax Act, any payer — your employer, your bank, or any remitter — is required to deduct tax at 20% (the highest slab rate) instead of your actual applicable rate. Even if you're in the 5% or 10% bracket, you'd lose 20% upfront.
3. Your Tax Refunds Get Blocked Pending TDS refunds will stay stuck. No amount will be credited to your account until your PAN is reactivated and validated.
4. Banking and Investment Activities Get Disrupted Opening a new bank account or demat account requires a valid PAN. Mutual fund KYC processes and high-value transactions also depend on it. An inoperative PAN creates friction everywhere.
5. Form 15G/15H Becomes Invalid If you rely on Form 15G or 15H to avoid TDS on interest income (common for senior citizens and individuals below the taxable threshold), those forms won't be accepted with an inoperative PAN.
Who is Exempt from Linking?
Not everyone is required to link their PAN with Aadhaar. The following categories are officially exempt:
- Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) as defined under the Income Tax Act, 1961
- Individuals who are not citizens of India
- Citizens aged 80 years or above at any time during the previous financial year
- Residents of Assam, Meghalaya, and Jammu & Kashmir
If you fall in any of the above categories, you do not need to link and your PAN will not be marked inoperative for this reason.
How to Check Your PAN-Aadhaar Link Status (Step-by-Step)
This is the easiest part. You don't need to log in, you don't need any documents — just your PAN number and Aadhaar number.
Method 1: Through the Income Tax e-Filing Portal (Recommended)
Step 1: Open your browser and go to the official Income Tax e-Filing portal: 👉 https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/
Step 2: On the homepage, scroll down to the Quick Links section. You will see an icon labelled "Link Aadhaar/View Status". Click on it.
Step 3: You will land on the Link Aadhaar / View Status page. You'll see two options — "Link Aadhaar" and "View Status". Click Continue under "View Status".
Step 4: On the next screen, enter your 10-digit PAN number and your 12-digit Aadhaar number in the respective fields. Then click "View Link Aadhaar Status".
Step 5: A pop-up message will appear on your screen with the result.
If your PAN and Aadhaar are already linked, you will see a message like:
"Your PAN KXXXXXXX0C is already linked to given Aadhaar 37XXXXXXXX89"
If they are not linked, the message will indicate that linking is pending or that your PAN is inoperative.
Method 2: Via SMS (Without Internet)
If you don't have internet access or prefer a quicker route, you can check via SMS.
Step 1: Open the messaging app on your phone.
Step 2: Type the following message:
UIDPAN <12-digit Aadhaar number> <10-digit PAN number>
Example: UIDPAN 123456789012 ABCDE1234F
Step 3: Send this SMS to 567678 or 56161.
You'll receive a reply within a few minutes confirming whether your PAN and Aadhaar are linked.
Note: Checking your status is completely free. Never use any third-party websites or apps for this — they may collect your sensitive PAN and Aadhaar data.
What If Your PAN Is NOT Linked Yet?
If the status check shows that your PAN is not linked, here's what you need to do:
Step 1: Pay the ₹1,000 Penalty First
Before you can link, you must pay the late fee. Here's how:
- Go to https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/ and click on e-Pay Tax under Quick Links.
- Enter your PAN, confirm it, enter your mobile number, and click Continue.
- Enter the OTP received on your mobile.
- Click Proceed under the Income Tax tab.
- Select Tax Year as 2026-27, Type of Payment as Other Receipts (500), and choose "Fee for delay in linking PAN with Aadhaar".
- The penalty amount of ₹1,000 will be pre-filled. Confirm and complete the payment.
After payment, wait for 4–5 working days before proceeding with the linking step, as the portal needs time to verify and update your payment.
Step 2: Link Your PAN with Aadhaar
- Return to the e-Filing homepage and click on "Link Aadhaar" under Quick Links.
- Enter your PAN, Aadhaar number, and your name exactly as it appears on your Aadhaar.
- Click Validate.
- Enter the 6-digit OTP sent to your Aadhaar-registered mobile number.
- Submit the request.
Once submitted, your PAN should become operative again within 7 to 30 days, after UIDAI validates the details.
What If Your Name Doesn't Match?
This is a common issue. If the name on your PAN and Aadhaar are even slightly different — a spelling variation, initials, or a missing middle name — the linking will fail.
Before attempting to link, make sure:
- The date of birth matches on both documents.
- The name is consistent. Correct any discrepancy via the UIDAI portal (for Aadhaar changes) or through Protean eGov (formerly NSDL) for PAN corrections.
- Your Aadhaar-registered mobile number is active, as you'll need it to receive OTPs.

The PAN-Aadhaar linking requirement is not going away, and neither are the consequences of ignoring it. A two-minute status check today can save you from unexpected TDS deductions, blocked refunds, and a ₹1,000 fine down the line.
